The 81st Annual Academy Awards show was watched by a majority of Elon University Sunday night. In an informal survey of nearly 100 Elon faculty, staff and students the morning after the show, more than half of those interviewed said they watched the show.

Many people knew that “Slumdog Millionaire” had won best picture, despite not having watched the show, with 64 percent of respondents correctly identifying the winner.

Only 54 percent of those interviewed had actually seen the film, which swept the show winning eight Oscars, although many of those who had not seen it expressed an interest in seeing it now.

Those who had seen the movie shared personal opinions into why they believe the movie won best picture. Shared insight among responses expressed that the movie is unlike any other movie that has been released lately. Also, its portrayal of another world unfathomable to many Western audiences presented a profound political message.

“Slumdog Millionaire” tells the story of children in India who live as scavengers and thieves on the streets in order to survive. The main character Jamal, played by Dev Patel, eventually goes on to the popular Indian edition of “Who Wants to be a Millionaire” to reconnect with his childhood love, Latika, played by Freida Pinto.

Reasons for not watching the show ranged from having to studying and do homework to watching the Duke University Blue Devils triumph over Wake Forest University Demon Deacons 101-91 in men’s basketball last night.

  1. Hands-down my favorite still shot from this assignment was your four-panel image. NICE! When it’s a photo of people in your community you MUST include the NAMES in the caption, though!

Your second paragraph is convoluted and “inside-outed” – check it and simplify.

    You have good links.

It’s great that you edited many responses into the video, but you should have included several direct quotations in the copy block – in the body of the story – to make it as effective as possible.
