“She was it, my mom and my dad”

When Linda Kerns was 5 years old, her mother came down with Alzheimer’s disease.

At the time, because the disease was not recognized, there was no treatment. With a job, a sick wife and three children to look after, Kerns’ father sought to hire someone to help raise the family. He employed Elizabeth Watkins for the job.
